Carley Zarzeka ’15: Recent Works

Carley Zarzeka ’15, the art & art-history department’s 2015-16 post-baccalaureate artist-in-residence, will exhibit a body of work developed during her residency.

From Artist to Audience: Italian Drawings and Prints
From the 15th Through 18th Centuries

This exhibition features a selection of 15th–18th-century Italian Old Master prints and drawings. It is curated by art-history majors Clara Fritz, Paris Humphrey, Samantha Mendoza-Ferguson, Sara Pattiz, Rebecca Race, Isabel Richards and Samuel Richards, under the direction of Melinda Schlitt.

Jocelyn Swigger, Piano

Rubendall Recital Hall, Weiss Center for the Arts

Pianist Jocelyn Swigger will play all the Chopin etudes, pairing them with some audience-driven improvisation and some tunes from Tin Pan Alley. These etudes are some of the most beautiful and difficult pieces in the piano repertoire, and this is a rare opportunity to hear them all played live.

Reading by Stellfox Distinguished Writer Edwidge Danticat

MacArthur Fellow and Stellfox Award-winner Edwidge Danticat is the author of several books, including Breath, Eyes, Memory, an Oprah Book Club selection; Krik? Krak!, a National Book Award finalist; and Brother, I’m Dying, a 2007 finalist for the National Book Award and 2008 winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for autobiography. Her most recent books are Mama’s Nightingale, a picture book, and Untwine, a young-adult novel. Danticat’s reading will be followed by a Q&A, book signing and reception.

Weiss Prize Concert

Mathers Theatre, Holland Union Building

This year’s recipients of the Emil R. and Tamar Weiss Prize in the Creative Arts use recorded conversation to explore the ways shared reality is perceived. Rachael Smith ’16 composes music based on the conversations’ contents and speech patterns. Anastasi Putri ’16’s choreography explores conversational processes and taps the rhythms in Smith’s work. Together, they will premiere a work in Mathers Theatre, followed by a performance-art installation in Goodyear Gallery.

Black Music Matters: Performance as Social Activism

Anita Tuvin Schlechter Auditorium

The ºìĞÓÖ±²¥app Choir, Jazz Ensemble and DICE present a concert that interweaves music and text to raise awareness about structural, historical and contemporary racism in the U.S. This program incorporates writings by Langston Hughes, Amiri Baraka, Katherine Chapin and New York Times journalists; its musical styles include traditional spirituals, an oratorio by William Grant Still and the bebop of Dizzy Gillespie.

Reception and Artist’s Talk: Thomas Wharton

This exhibition showcases work created by Thomas Wharton during a monthlong residency with the art & art-history department. While on campus, Wharton will maintain an open-door policy in his studio; he also will participate in critiques and lead a series of demonstrations for students. The annual artist-in-residence program is made possible with generous support through the Sylvia J. Smith ’73 Fund.

The Jane L. and Robert H. Weiner Lecture in the Fine Arts: Mary Miss

Since the 1960s, eminent artist Mary Miss has explored the relationship of the visual arts to public engagement with the environment. Working across sculpture, architecture, landscape design and installation, Miss continues to make art that addresses such pressing concerns as water conservation and climate change.  Among her many notable achievements, Miss is the architect of the ongoing initiative CALL, City as a Living Laboratory, a platform for artists working in collaboration with scientists, urban planners, policy makers, and the public, to make issues of sustainability tangible through the arts.

This concert is dedicated to Harry and Ruth Donahue Houdeshel, both of the class of 1940.

Student choreographers collaborate with Dickinson’s student dance company, the Dance Theatre Group (DTG), to present an evening of new choreographic research. This year’s show promises to be personal, political and poetic. DTG is under the direction of Sarah Skaggs, director of the dance program, with assistance from Erin Crawley-Woods, visiting assistant professor of dance.
