In between study-abroad semesters last year, Justin Wong '25 completed a database-focused internship in Greece. Less than a year later, he gained exposure to client services at a software and data company. He discusses those experiences and shares advice for students considering internships.
Majors:
Quantitative economics and data analytics.
Internship title/position:
Client solutions intern.
How I found this internship.
Family connections. My mother's workplace uses FactSet's services.
What it's like, day to day:
The first three weeks of the internship were devoted to training. During those weeks, my day-to-day schedule was classroom-like, as I learned FactSet's client types and how to use their product. We interns were tested on our knowledge during this phase, via exams. The second phase was account shadowing. I was put onto one buy-side and one sell-side account. When you're placed on the account, your role is to use your training to help add value. This comes in the form of a project pool, which is an email chain for consultants to post projects that interns can help out with. These projects can range from simple tasks to really complicated ones. Examples include answering client questions and sending goodwill emails. Also, throughout the summer, interns are tasked with individual and group projects. Thes could be an M&A proposition, individual portfolio management and finance focus presentations.
How it's helpful:
This internship has better prepared me for the next year after Dickinson, because it's given me exposure to both the buy side and sell side of the financial sector, as well as a lens into the daily workflows of clients like IB, PM, WM, traders and more. It's helped me discover what I like and don't like, when it comes to finance. Its very fast-paced, so it seems like you're always doing something. This can be very fulfilling but exhausting at times.
Previous internship:
I have had experience at a Xenatus Global, a company located in Nicosia, Cyprus, where I was working on a HR database project, utilizing the Microsoft power BI and power automate tools. I did this after my semester abroad, in between the fall and spring semesters of last year. I hope to receive a return offer from the internship I am currently in, but I will still keep my mind open and apply to other companies.
Advice for students considering an internship:
Networking is your best friend. Make sure you are prepared for your interview, and do your research. It's easy to interview with a company that aligns with your values. Internships are a great way to find out what you don't and do like and to gain experience on your résumé, so the more internships, the better.
