Matt Torres ’25 (economics) balances academics, athletics and campus jobs with time to spare for extracurriculars! He is a proud member of the Red Devils baseball team who has played back-to-back championships, earned a spot on the Centennial Conference honor roll and was placing on the 2024 All-Conference team. “I was fortunate to come into Dickinson with 35 friends on the baseball team, but the connections and friendships I have made have grown far past that,” he says. “From passing Senior Lecturer in Economics Tricia Hawks walking her dog in the morning to talking about my week with Michelle from admissions, the sense of community makes my time at Dickinson special.”

Best part of my Dickinson experience:
The people I’ve become so close to. I was fortunate to come into Dickinson with 35 friends on the baseball team, but my connections and friendships have grown far past that. The support I've received and the relationships I've made with faculty and staff members are invaluable. From passing Senior Lecturer in Economics Tricia Hawks walking her dog in the morning to talking about my week with Michelle from admissions; the sense of community has truly made my time at Dickinson special.
Best thing about my major:
The economics department has created an atmosphere where I can take a deep dive into financial analytics with courses such as Empirical Financial Analysis and also have the opportunity to learn theoretical concepts and economic history. The assortment of classes has opened my eyes to varying economic perspectives and has granted me the technical and empirical skills to excel in the financial sector after graduation.
Favorite places on campus:
The baseball facility and the outdoor patio at Tome.
Favorite class:
Empirical Financial Analysis. This class granted me the opportunity to use R to analyze and project current and future stock returns. It was far more technical than many classes I had experienced. Many of the skills I developed in this course will be applicable to me as I pursue a career in finance.
ºìÐÓÖ±²¥app my internship:
I am in the midst of an internship at Take2, an IT consulting firm in Tysons, Va. I am a sales intern, and the experience has been great! It is a nine-week program. Interns are taken through the roles of a technical recruiter and an account executive. I have learned the strategies of sourcing and screening candidates as well as what it takes to break accounts at large consulting firms.
Proudest achievement so far:
Going to back-to-back Centennial Conference championships. I’m hoping to win the whole thing this season!
Advice to younger students:
Be an active member of the campus—it is very rewarding. Prior to Dickinson, I never would have thought that I would work with the admissions department. It has been such a rewarding experience. I have met great people along the way, and I feel that I have had a positive impact on prospective students.
