Yuan "Wendy" Lin ’16

The arts were not a priority in Yuan “Wendy” Lin ‘16’s high school in China, but she is making up for lost time on that front. A double major in art & art history and theatre, she discusses the red-and-white website that lured her to the U.S., her costume-design internship, studying sustainable art in China and more.

Majors:

Art & art history (studio art) and theatre arts (design and technology).

Clubs and organizations:

College Choir; Department of Theatre & Dance (intern).

Honors/scholarships/awards:

Dean’s List and Hugh B. & Helen Kisner Woodward Scholarship.

Favorite movie:

McDull: The Pork of Music.

On choosing a major:

At my secondary school in China, art and music classes were regarded as inferior to science classes, and there were no theatre classes at all. After I started taking studio-art lessons at Dickinson, I felt an innate pull toward art, and that impulse/instinct is reflected in my works.

On choosing Dickinson:

The red-and-white website looked the best among the many websites that I visited. So I applied under Early Decision 1.

Favorite place on campus:

Third-floor practice room in Weiss.

Favorite Dining Hall food:

Vietnamese flank steak with rice noodles from the grill.

Favorite class:

Music history 102, taught by Professor [of Music] Amy Wlodarski. It opened another world to me.

On studying abroad:

I took part in a summer program called Seismic Japan. I was overwhelmed by the devotion that geologists put into their research for the sake of others’ well-being. I also studied sustainable art in China.

Talent/hobby:

Every week I make more than 400 yogurt parfait cups that are sold on campus.

Proudest accomplishment:

Getting into Dickinson.

As a kid, I wanted to be …

… a teacher.

This past summer I interned in Greenbrier Valley Theatre in Lewisburg, W.V. I was introduced to this internship by my advisor, [Professor of Theatre] Sherry Harper-McCombs. As the costume intern, I helped build costumes during the day and ran the show in the evenings. I learned a lot about how a professional theatre works, and I was also amazed by the fact that a lot of the employees have multiple duties; they can act, design, direct and play music.
