FYSM 100 First-Year Seminar
The First-Year Seminar (FYS) introduces students to Dickinson as a "community of inquiry" by developing habits of mind essential to liberal learning. Through the study of a compelling issue or broad topic chosen by their faculty member, students will:
- Critically analyze information and ideas
- Examine issues from multiple perspectives
- Discuss, debate and defend ideas, including one's own views, with clarity and reason
- Develop discernment, facility and ethical responsibility in using information, and
- Create clear academic writing
The small group seminar format of this course promotes discussion and interaction among students and their professor. In addition, the professor serves as students' initial academic advisor. This course does not duplicate in content any other course in the curriculum and may not be used to fulfill any other graduation requirement.
ARTH 323 Advanced Sculpture
Various sculpture media and studio processes will be explored including welding, casting, mold making, installation art, and expanded media as appropriate. An emphasis will be placed on technical and conceptual development to realize individual creative expressions.
ARTH 123 Fundamentals of Sculpture
A studio course covering basic elements of three-dimensional composition and sculpture. Students will construct sculptures examining a range of media and fabrication techniques.
ARTH 235 Post Studio Projects
This course explores contemporary artistic methods that compliment traditional studio practices. Emphasizing interdisciplinary and non-media specific approaches, students will engage in site-specific, collaborative, and conceptual projects that challenge the boundaries of medium, material, and space. Through a combination of research, discussion, critique, exhibition, performance, and documentation, students will develop creative works that respond to diverse contexts —ranging from public spaces to digital platforms. The course encourages critical thinking about the role of the artist in a dynamic cultural and visual landscape. Repeatable, with permission of instructor.
