2023 Report on Philanthropy

A Letter from President Jones

DEAR DICKINSONIANS:

I am thrilled to share some of the remarkable developments that your contributions have made possible during the past year. Your generosity is instrumental in shaping Dickinson’s future—and the futures of a new generation of leaders who will contribute meaningfully to our world.

First and foremost, I would like to express our deepest thanks for your support of our Campaign for Scholarships: Change a Life—Change the World. By providing access to a Dickinson education for deserving students, you’ve made a profound impact. This year, you helped the campaign hit the $50 million milestone, 73 percent toward our $75 million goal. Gifts from more than 4,100 Dickinsonians thus far have created 100 new scholarship funds, helped provide financial aid for more than 1,800 current students and enabled Dickinson to continue to meet the full need of every student we admit.

Inside this report, you’ll find testimonials from many of the students you’ve helped through this campaign. You’ll also read about donors Sam Rose ’58 and George and Jennifer Ward Reynolds ’77, who’ve seen firsthand the impact of scholarship support. As you read these stories, I hope you understand, as I do, the truly life-changing impact your scholarship gifts have.

In recent years, we have embarked on a journey to stay at the forefront of academic excellence by introducing innovative programs that prepare our students for the challenges of an ever-evolving job market. One such initiative that your contributions have made possible is our data analytics program. In today’s informationdriven world, the ability to analyze and interpret data is of paramount importance. Investments in this program from alumni like Richard ’75 and Catherine Friend White ’78 (who are highlighted in this report) are equipping our students with the skills and knowledge they need to excel.

Our efforts to foster student success also depend on your gifts supporting internship grants. This year alone, you helped more than 80 students afford to take advantage of these career-shaping opportunities that are so vital to graduates entering today’s job market. In these pages you can read about one alumni couple, Mark ’71 and Harriet Marcus Lehman ’72, who’ve provided internship support to Dickinson students for years—and even go the extra mile, hosting student-interns in their home.

The new John M. Paz ’78 Alumni & Family Center has just opened its doors and stands as a testament to our alumni community’s engagement with the college. This beautiful building is well on its way to becoming a hub of activity on our campus, providing a welcoming space for our alumni and families to connect and collaborate as they strengthen their ties to each other, the college and current students.

Most important, with a lead gift from John Paz ’78 and support from groups like the Pugs Foundation and Phi Delta Theta alums, both of whom you can read about in this report, this project has been funded entirely by donations from Dickinson alums and family members. Your support has transformed this vision into reality, and we are immensely proud to have such a vibrant and welcoming space that fosters lifelong connections and learning.

Dickinson has long valued diversity and inclusivity, and the college depends on support from the wider college community to further our important work in this area. Last April, Lauren Ashley Smith ’06 and her wife, Brooke Helburn, made a challenge gift to inspire Dickinsonians to rally behind this cause during the annual Day of Giving. Their gift, and your response to it, provided vital funding to support Chief Diversity Officer Tony Boston and his team in their mission to institutionalize inclusivity at Dickinson and provide tools to combat injustice and inequity.

As we celebrate all that you’ve made possible through your generosity, it is important to remember that our work is far from finished. The challenges facing higher education and this world are complex and everchanging. However, with your continued support, we are confident we can continue to provide an exceptional educational experience for our students, who will graduate to become the leaders making a better tomorrow for all of us.

In closing, I want to express my deepest gratitude for your trust, commitment and dedication to Dickinson. We are honored to partner with you in our mission, and we look forward to the many great accomplishments we will achieve together.

If you ever find yourself in our area, we would be delighted to personally show you the impact of your generosity on our campus.

Sincerely,

John E. Jones III ’77, P’11

President
