Lexie Raczka, Environmental Science Major and Art & Art History Minor
Lexie Raczka '15
Lexie is a senior Environmental Science major and Art History minor from Mansfield, Massachusetts. During her first year at Dickinson she became exposed to the world of sustainable agriculture, a realm of environmental issues that she had not previously been engaged with, through Students Interested in Sustainable Agriculture (SISA) and volunteering at the College Farm. Over the past four years her interest has developed into a passion for sustainable food systems. She has delved into food systems work through interning with Dickinson’s Dining Services to improve the sustainability of its operations, working for an environmental organization with an emphasis on local food in Illinois, advocating for sustainable food systems in SISA, and working at the College Farm. She spent the spring of 2014 studying abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark where she explored food systems from a European perspective and even studied the culture and sustainability surrounding New Nordic cuisine.
Lexie is especially interested in food access and the tensions between privilege and justice in food systems, particularly alternative food movements. This year she is conducting independent research to determine food is access and consumption in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Lexie is excited to participate in the Baird Sustainability Fellows and delve into discussion about other people’s passions with regard to sustainability.
