Student Snapshot: Lusila De La Rosa '24

Lusila De La Rosa

Lusila De La Rosa ’24 (educational studies, sociology) is a Community Engagement Fellow and Posse Scholar who also works at Dickinson’s Trout Gallery. Below, she discusses what she loves most about her major and her time at the Trout, her work in helping to facilitate mentorship and volunteer opportunities, and much more.

Hometown:

Los Angeles, California.

Majors:

Educational studies and sociology, with a minor in anthropology.

Clubs/organizations:

Latina Discussion Group.

Scholarship/honors/awards:

Posse Foundation Scholarship.

Favorite movie:

McFarland, USA.

Best thing about my Dickinson experience:

I really enjoy working at the Trout Gallery. I love how it is a very welcoming and safe space. I have created some great friends and memories there. I have also improved on some very important skills, such as communication, planning, public speaking and teaching. It is a place I am always excited to be. I get to be with great people and art!

Best thing about my major:

I love how supportive the professors are; they are always willing to help you succeed in their classrooms and outside of class as well.

Favorite place on campus:

The Education Center in Weiss.

Favorite off-campus spot:

Square Bean.

Post-Dickinson plans:

To return to California and get my credentials and become a teacher there. I would like to teach either middle school or high school.

If I could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, it would be …

… Frida Kahlo. She inspires a lot of my personal artwork.

Proudest accomplishment so far:

Running my fifth marathon.

ºìÐÓÖ±²¥app my internship:

I have an Internship through CEF at Big Brothers Big Sisters. I work with our local elementary schools and match them with Dickinson students. Our program is focused on creating one-on-one mentoring; many of our Dickinson students volunteer some time out of their week to spend time with their “littles,” working on building relationships and developing communication skills.

Most important thing I’ve learned so far:

If something matters to you, speak up about it. Do not let anyone silence you; advocate for yourself. There are people out there who think like you and will support you.

Advice to younger students:

You are smart, beautiful and unique. Do not hide the amazing true you!
